Fence staining questions, answered straight.

Done with proper prep and back-brushed in, a semi-transparent stain holds colour for roughly four to six years on a Niagara Falls fence before it wants a refresh, and a solid stain a bit longer. Yards within a few blocks of the Falls or the gorge, where mist keeps the air damper than the Niagara average, tend to sit at the shorter end of that range unless a penetrating stain was used rather than a film-forming product. Skip the prep and even a premium stain can flake inside two years.

For most wood fences, stain. It soaks into the grain and seals from within, so when it ages it fades evenly and re-coats easily. Paint sits on top as a film, and on an outdoor fence that film eventually cracks and peels, which means scraping before you can repaint. Stain is less work to live with and looks more like wood. Paint mainly makes sense if a fence is already painted and matching it is the priority.

Usually, if it is flagged when booking. Niagara Falls has a meaningful share of guest-facing rental properties near the tourist core, and most staining contractors are used to scheduling around changeover days so the crew works while a unit is empty rather than during a guest stay. Stain odour and wet-to-the-touch time are the two practical concerns; both are avoidable with a day or two of lead time between the job and the next check-in.

Almost always saved. Grey is surface-deep, UV-oxidized surface fibre and grime, not rot. A clean and brighten lifts most of the original colour back before any stain, and the wood underneath is usually sound, including many of the decades-old cedar fences in the older Chippawa-area streets. Late spring through early fall, on dry stretches. The wood needs to be dry going in and to stay dry for a day or two after the stain is applied so it can cure, which can take a little longer near the Falls corridor than in a drier part of Niagara. Summer dry spells are prime, which is also when staining contractors tend to be busiest, so booking earlier in the season generally gets a better date.
