Why a dry day is not automatically a good day
Stain is a chemical product, and every product has a temperature range it is formulated to go on and cure within. Outside that range, the wood can still be bone dry and the weather forecast can still say "clear," and the job can still fail: too cold and the stain never cures properly, too hot and direct sun dries the surface faster than it can penetrate the wood. Both failure modes look different from a rain-related failure, which is why they are easy to miss if the only thing being checked is whether it will rain.
The minimum-temperature rule
Most exterior wood stains, oil-based and water-based alike, list a minimum air AND surface temperature on the product label, commonly somewhere in the range of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) and up, though the exact figure varies by product and by manufacturer. Below that minimum, the stain does not flow, level, or cure the way it was designed to, which can leave a tacky, uneven, or prematurely failing finish even though it looked fine going on. The surface temperature of the wood itself, not just the air temperature, is the number that actually matters, and a shaded fence board can sit several degrees cooler than the air on a cool morning. Checking the specific product label for its stated range is the reliable way to know, since general rules of thumb vary by formula.
Direct hot sun: flash-drying and lap marks
The opposite problem shows up on the hottest, sunniest days, especially on the south- and west-facing runs already noted for taking the most direct sun on the guide hub. When a fence surface gets hot enough in direct sun, stain can start to dry on top before it has time to soak into the wood and before the next section is brushed in beside it, a problem generally called flash-drying. The visible result is lap marks: faint overlap lines where one brushed section met the drying edge of the section before it, and an overall blotchier, less even finish than the same product applied in cooler, indirect conditions. Working the shaded side of the fence first, staining earlier or later in the day rather than at peak sun, or picking an overcast (but still dry) day all reduce this risk.
The overnight low matters too

Temperature adds a second condition to that same window: if the overnight low drops back down near or below the product's minimum cure temperature while the stain is still setting up, the cure can be disrupted even if the daytime high was comfortable and the day itself stayed dry. This is mostly a shoulder-season risk, in the cooler stretches of spring and fall, where a warm afternoon can still be followed by a cold night.
Reading the forecast for a staining day
- Check the daytime high AND the overnight low for the full drying window, not just the day of application, against the product label's stated minimum.
- Check surface temperature, not just air temperature, especially on a shaded run early in the day or a sun-facing run at midday.
- On a hot, sunny forecast, plan to work shaded sections first or stain earlier/later in the day rather than at peak sun.
- A mild, overcast, dry day is usually the easiest conditions of all: warm enough to cure, cool enough that flash-drying is not a concern.
