A brand new fence is not automatically ready for stain the day it goes up. Fresh lumber carries a sealed surface and, for pressure-treated wood, real moisture inside it, and staining before either has settled is the single most common reason a first coat fails early. This is a different question from restoring an old fence: an old fence is grey and needs cleaning before it will take stain, while a new fence is the opposite problem, the wood may be too smooth, too wet, or both, for stain to actually bond and soak in.

Mill glaze: the shiny surface on freshly milled lumber

Milling lumber at the sawmill compresses and heats the surface fibres, leaving a thin, hard, slightly shiny layer called mill glaze. Stain applied straight onto mill glaze tends to sit on top rather than soak in, so it can look fine going on and then peel or wear unevenly within a season. Weathering outdoors for a few weeks lets sun, rain, and general exposure break down that surface layer; a light sanding of the most exposed faces speeds the same process along. There is no fixed number of days that fits every fence, since the rate depends on sun exposure and weather, but a common rule of thumb from the wood-finishing industry is to give freshly milled lumber roughly four to eight weeks outdoors before staining, and to check the wood itself rather than the calendar.

Pressure-treated wood: check the moisture, not just the calendar

Pressure-treated lumber is forced full of preservative in a water-based or oil-based carrier, and a lot of that liquid is still in the wood when it leaves the yard. Staining over wood that is still wet inside traps moisture under the coating and prevents proper penetration, so the stain fails early no matter how carefully it was applied. Some pressure-treated lumber is labelled KDAT, kiln-dried after treatment, which is dried back down after the treatment process and can generally be stained much sooner. Lumber without that label, often called green or wet-treated, needs longer, commonly several months over a summer, before it has dried enough to accept stain properly. The label on the lumber, or the receipt from wherever it was bought, is the fastest way to know which kind is on the fence.

The water-bead test

A simple way to check readiness without special tools: splash a small amount of water onto a flat, unweathered part of a board, ideally somewhere inconspicuous like the back of a post. If the water beads up and sits on the surface, the wood is still too wet or still glazed, and is not ready. If the water darkens the wood and soaks in within a few minutes, the wood is dry and open enough to take stain. This test works for both mill glaze and pressure-treatment moisture, since both show up the same way: water that will not absorb.

Cedar new fences

New cedar is not pressure-treated and does not carry the same moisture concern, but it still benefits from a short weathering period to let any mill glaze wear off and let the grain open. Cedar that passes the water-bead test can usually be stained on the sooner end of that range.
