Gutter guard products fall into five broad categories, regardless of brand. The category matters more than the brand name on the box, because the category is what determines whether the guard sheds ice cleanly, blocks fine debris, or quietly fails behind a shingle line you cannot see from the ground.

Why this guide only recommends two of the five

The rest of this guide only ever compares micro-mesh against a leaf-screen retrofit, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. Both hold up to the freeze-thaw cycling described throughout this guide, both drain rather than trap meltwater, and both are widely available from Niagara installers who can point to a track record on local homes. The other three types are real products with a real place in the market, but none of them are the right default recommendation for a St. Catharines home for the reasons in the table above.

A reverse-curve hood is worth a second look specifically for a homeowner who wants zero fastener contact with the fascia and is willing to trade some fine-debris performance for that. A bristle insert is worth considering as a cheap, temporary measure on a single-storey home with light tree cover, not as a permanent fix. A foam insert is not recommended in this guide under any scenario common in the Niagara market.

The one factor that decides which type survives a Niagara winter is drainage, not debris-blocking. Every type in the table above blocks debris reasonably well when new. What separates a guard that lasts many years from one that fails within a few is whether meltwater drains off the guard before it refreezes against it.
