When to Seal a Niagara Driveway Before Winter

The two asphalt sealers compared on this page set a higher bar than that general figure: Black Jack's own technical data sheet for Drive-Maxx 500 calls for application at 55 degrees F (about 13 degrees C) and rising, and says not to apply if rain or overnight temperatures below 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) are expected within 36 hours. Latex-ITE's own product page for Airport Grade requires at least 55 degrees F (about 13 degrees C) overnight for the sealer to cure properly, and states plainly: do not seal in early spring or late fall. Both manufacturer figures run several degrees warmer than a flat 10C/5C rule of thumb, which is why an early-fall job is a meaningfully safer bet than one attempted in late October, not just marginally so. None of that works without the right sealer for the right surface, since an asphalt sealer is not a substitute for a concrete one. This section explains the real timing before naming any product.

Who this isn't for
This is not for a driveway with structural damage, deep potholes, or major cracking; a sealer protects a sound surface, it does not repair one, and a driveway in that condition needs patching or professional resurfacing first. It is also not for anyone unsure which surface they have, since applying an asphalt sealer to concrete or a concrete sealer to asphalt does not protect the surface the way either product is designed to.
