Higher MERV Isn't Always Better for Your Furnace

Niagara furnaces mostly sit idle through the summer, and late August into September is when most homes here start them up for the first time since spring. A furnace running on an old, clogged filter has to work harder to move air, and a fresh filter at startup is one of the few HVAC maintenance jobs a homeowner does entirely themselves, with no technician needed. MERV, short for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, rates how well a filter captures airborne particles on a scale most residential filters fall between roughly 8 and 13. A higher MERV number captures smaller particles, including allergens and some bacteria, but it can also restrict airflow more, which matters on an older furnace or blower motor not built for a denser filter. Most 1-inch pleated filters are rated for roughly one to three months of use, though a home with pets or ongoing renovation dust may need more frequent changes; checking a furnace's own manual before choosing a high-MERV filter is worth doing rather than assuming the highest number is automatically the best choice.
